Prosecutor Teaches Sunday School

Train children in the way they should go; when they grow old, they won’t depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

I recently heard that the Manhattan District Attorney teaches Sunday School every week at his church. Every week. His students send him encouraging notes when he has a big case in the news.

This got me thinking. What excuses do I give for being too busy to train up young believers? I’ve done it before? Too busy? Not my thing? If the Manhattan District Attorney has time to prepare and teach weekly Sunday School lessons, my excuses seem pretty lame.

Granted, we are not all called to teach Sunday School. But God has given each of us gifts and talents and experiences that are appropriate to different areas of ministry. Are we committed to doing the work God has set before us?

If we are still here on Earth, with hearts beating and lungs breathing, God still has work for us to do. Maybe it’s praying every day for the young people of our church, using the church directory for names and photos. Maybe it’s getting the building ready and safe for their activities. Maybe its caring for little ones while their parents are in worship so the parents can raise them in faith at home. Maybe it’s organizing special events and mission projects. Maybe it’s teaching.

The next generation is growing and thriving. The question is: are they growing in faith? God has given us the task of passing our faith to a new generation, and a prosecutor in Manhattan is inspiring us to get it done. Amen.
