Ice Fishing & Business Cards

A mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ starts with talking to people. We have to talk to start a relationship, and then we can have spiritual conversations that lead to God connections. But most people I've met in Midwestern churches are extremely reluctant to talk about church or faith with people outside of church. Or even people inside a church, for that matter...

So my heart was strangely warmed, to borrow a phrase from John Wesley, when I learned that one of the members of Bridges UMC had found a new outlet for evangelism - with no coaching or suggestions from the pastor! Bill loves ice fishing. And Bill loves Bridges Church. So Bill started carrying church business cards in his coat pockets as well as extra hand warmers. Every time he is on the ice, he hands out business cards and hand warmers and tells ice fishermen that our church wants people to have warm hands and warm hearts, and that they can check out our church if they are looking for a church home. Then he goes and catches a bunch of fish. Some of which he shares with church members.

I don't think I know of a better example of 'indigenous evangelism.'
